  Little guide of the Basilica - English -

 

1. Chapel of St. Antonius

St. Antonius. This painting is by Roberto Galperti, born in Verolanuova (1862-1905), who painted also all "The Way of the Cross" and the decorative frescos of the Dome.

2. Altar of the Guardian Angel

Francesco Maffei (1625-1660). "The Gardian Angel" m 5x3. An Angel protects a little boy from sin (Adam and Eve) and guides him to virtue (three women). In the upper part of the painting there are some Angels and Saints who symbolize the triumph of virtue (The work is the Altar of the Guardian Angels)

3. Altar of St. Francis Xavier

Pietro Ricchi, called "il Lucchese" (1606-1675). "St. Francis Xavier" m 4x2.5. In the foreground St. Francis Xavier in prayer.

4. Altar of Immaculate Conception

Pietro Ricchi. "The Fall of Adam and Eve and the promise of the Redeemer" (1649) m 4x2.5. In the foreground God the Father condems the snake. In the upper part is reproduced the Immaculate Virgin who has the Redeemer in her womb.

5. Chapel of the St. Rosary

Chapel of the St. Rosary. Placed in the middle, "Our Lady of the Rosary" m 3.5x2 by Gian Battista Trotti (1556-1611) called "The Malosso". It is settled into the 15 misteries of the Rosary by the same painter.

Gian Battista Trotti, called "The Malosso" (1556-1611) "Our Lady of the Rosary" m 3x2. Our Lady with the Child dominates in the upper part, while on the lower part, on the left-hand St. Domenico, in the middle St. Laurence and on the right-hand St. Catherine the martyr.

Andrea Celesti (1637-1712). "The Nativity, of Our Lady" m 10x5.5. In the upper part, God the Father blessing the Baby, In the foreground St. Anne with the Baby.(The painting is in the xchapel of the St. Rosary, on the left-hand side).

Andrea Celesti (1637-1712). "The Assumption of Our Lady" (1707) m 10x5.5. In the upper part, the Virgin among some angels, in the lower part, the Apostles near the empty grave ( This painting is in the Chapel of the St. Rosary, on the right hand side).

8. Chapel of the Holy Sacrament

Chapel of the Holy Sacrament. In the background "The Last Supper" by Maffei; on both sides you can see the paintings by Tiepolo. Both the floor and the altar surmounted by the tabernacle are very valuable.
Gian Battista Tiepolo (1696-1770). "The Sacrifice of Melchisedech" (1740) m 10x5.5. Melchisedech lifts up a loaf of bread as an offering. On the right there are the wariors, holding their banners, on the left the people with the victims for the sacrifice and in the upper part some angels among the clouds. (On the left wall).
Gian Battista Tiepolo (1696-1770). "The Fall of the manna" (1740) m 10x5.5. Moses, on a rock, lifts up his hands. Behind him the tent, the Jewish chiefs and priests. The angels are pouring manna from heaven. In the foreground the crowd is picking up the heavenly food. (On the right wall).
Tabernacle. It dates from the XVII century. Some Precious marbles of different types adorn it. There is also a little temple to expose the Holy Sacrament. The little silver and gold door has some precious stones and lapis-lazuli.
Francesco Maffei (1625-1660) "The last supper" m 6x4. The Apostles are gathered round Jesus. Judas, picking up an amphora, turns his back on Jesus. (On the front wall)

9. Altar of St. Charles, called "of the Counts"

Pietro Liberi called "Cavre" of Padua (1614-1687). "Our Lady with St. Charles, St. Antonius and the counts Gambara" (1658) m 4x4.5. In the foreground two members of the House of Gambara are knelt and embraced by St. Charles Borromeo. Behind them there is St. Antonius. They are all looking to Our Lady with the Child. At the bottom a view of Verolanuova. (The work is located in the Altar of St. Charles, called "of the Counts").

10. Altar of Our Lady of Sorrows

Andrea Mainardi, of Cremona, called "Il Chiavechino" (1550-?). "The Deposition" (1581) m 3x2 from the school of the Campi of the same city. In the middle the dead Jesus in the lap of the Virgin, on the left St. Laurence martyr, on the right, St. Maria di Magdala knelt and St. John the Evangelist standing. (The work is located in the altar of Our Lady of Sorrows).

11. Altar of the Virgins

Giulio Cirello of Padua (1633-1709). "The St. Virgins" (1658) m 4.5x2.5. Above the Saints, St Nicola of Tolentino and John the Baptist are crying for mercy. In the background a view of Verolanuova with its Basilica and Gambara Palace. (The work is located in the altar of the Virgins).

12. Lovely Font

The Lovely Font. A white marble niche in the wall is framed in a bas-relief (XVI century) reproducing two angels. A votive lamp has been recently placed here in memory of Don Arcangelo Tadini, born in Verolanuova and Servant of God. He was here baptized and he founded the Working Nuns of the Saint House of Nazareth.

13. Nave

With smooth barrel vault contain an imposing fresco.

Gaetano Cresseri (1870-1933) "St. Laurence presents the poor to the Goavernor of Rome". (The fresco, the project of which was made by the architect Antonio Tagliaferri, is located in the vault of the nave).

Ludovico Gallina (1752-1787). "The Crucifixion" (1786) m 10x8. The painting is above the main front portal. It’s the biggest painting of the Basilica and it was achieved in 1786 by Pietro Tantin, pupil of the author who died during the execution of the work. It reproduces the dramatic scene of Golgotha. The central group is composed of Our Lady, St. John and the pious ladies. . This painting ends the pictorial cycle of the Basilica from the end of 1500 to 1787

14. Transect

Is based on four Triumphal arches place on pilasters corinthian. It's a splendid view. The harmony of the architecture and the wealth of the frescos give the idea of the greatness of an art which justifies the always increasing admiration of the visitons. 

15. Presbytery

Presbytery. The polychrome floor is very impressing. In the middle of it there is the High Altar made of striped green marble (1822). Twelfe bronze medallions reproducing the Apostles are inserted in the frieze of the cyma of the Altar (1822). The balustrades (1673) are made of marble in different colours.

16. Choir and High Altar

Choir (1701-1703). Eighteenth-century work of the carver Bartolomeo Franchino from Verona. On the Apse wall a work of Andrea Celesti (1637-1712). "The Martyrdom of St. Laurence" (1703) m 9.5x4.5. The Saint smiles at his torturers. In the background there are some observers and in the upper part an angel holding the palm of martyrdom. (This work is the altar-piece of the High Altar)

The frescos, from a project of  the architect Antonio Tagliaferri, was painted by Roberto Galperti, Benedetto Lò from Verola  and the brother Cominelli from Manerbio
